Thank you for reading my reflections of this year’s Winter Solstice chart which represents the astrological New Year for the inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere. I’d like to share some reflections on the general meaning of Winter Solstice, then address the specifics of the coming year 2012.
I base these contemplations on the sidereal zodiac which utilizes the current true planetary alignments in relationship to the constellations. May you go outside on Winter Solstice and stand under the starry stars. Experience the infinite wisdom of our Universe pouring toward you, inspiring you, assisting you to bring forth your wisdom and joy.
WINTER SOLSTICE: THE BIG PICTURE
***The astrological chart for this day each year is the Solar return chart for the inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere. Always a nascent moment: hope incarnate for 2012.
It illustrates the possibilities and collective field of the coming year. In this case the year being the long-awaited 2012. Long awaited, as in millenniums of time for some cultures such as the Mayans. As astrologers we excitedly note the coming Pluto Square Uranus, for the first time since their alliance of revolution in the late 1960′s I am very excited. Many of us~YOU~ have been preparing for these times.
***This day is an annual collaboration in which Earthly Light and Galactic Light merge into new awakenings. Light: as in knowledge, illumination, being able to see. It’s as if all the radio stations of our human ears/hearts are turned/tuned toward our higher selves, our galactic purpose. Yes, we all have a galactic purpose. On this day perhaps it is easier to relinquish our out-dated personalities and call in something larger, more expansive, more loving. This is a day meant for internal listening to your Guides, your Guidance, your Self.
***To me this is the most sacred of day each year. Sacred: defined as “regarded with great respect and reverence.” This day each year holds the sacred heart of humanity, a moment of inner listening and sometimes community celebration depending upon your personal preference. For years I co-created an annual Winter Solstice performance here in my Grand Teton homeland called The Gift Must Always Move (borrowed from Lewis Hyde’s brilliant book by the same title). But in recent years I have been mostly celebrating in a more solitary fashion in the presence of my guides/angels/dog or with one or two close friends. Together we have planted the seeds of our personal and combined intention. This year I had a hankering to return to the community celebration probably triggered by the current astrological conjunction of Neptune/Chiron/Vesta in Aquarius which encourages us to collaborate in new formations within our community of beloveds. Maybe next year I will help re-ignite this celebration as I see how all our hard-won personal shifts now can shower abundance upon our communities. Time to celebrate more and more and more…this new Field is all about play/doing what you love*** JOY***
***On this day the potential for inner light grows as we reach the darkest night. A focused laser looking inward can dispel depression/darkness. Yet we must face what haunts us, face those qualities of our inner shadow in order to embrace our Light. I wrote in my poem entitled Orion:
“It is the universal statement of a star the message Orion has carried in winter through the ages. It is dark which illuminates.”
***Winter Solstice: We see our beauty and what detracts from our beauty. And we make our vows to change for the better and for the betterment of all.
WINTER SOLSTICE 2011: GATEWAY to 2012
A stunning diverse potent revolutionary chart/year lie ahead
*We are living through an on-going historical period in which our illuminating Sun during Winter Solstice is closely aligned with what has traditionally be called the Gate of God~ which I like to call the Gate of Divinity~ a place that provides a steady stream of the Evolutionary Intelligence guiding our Humanity at this time. So we all have a particularly important responsibility to WAKE UP and PARTICIPATE in this on-going ever-evolving process. It is not about waiting for a savior to come along and get us out of our dilemma. This awakening is happening through our individual/collective actions as we follow the lead of our joyful heart.
*The opposite point traditionally called the Gate of Man~which I call the Gate of Humanity~is highlighted six months from now at Summer Solstice. What we glean NOW in focusing our intentions allows us to see concrete results at Summer Solstice. It’s important to be focused WITHIN at Winter Solstice so by Summer Solstice you can bring forth your creativity WITHOUT.
As Within, So Without: this is the order of Creation.
2011 December Solstice Sidereal Chart
*This chart shows the waning phase of Moon to Sun called the Balsamic phase which points to a coming year of harvesting wisdom from literally lifetimes of learning and passing on the seed of all you/we have learned to the next generation. Expect completions of languishing projects you haven’t yet able to finish. That sounds good doesn’t it?
*There is a QUARTET of aspects by major planets to our SUN~symbolic of cooperation/awakening on many levels. Let’s break that down:
Revolutionary Uranus in compassionate Pisces squares the truthful Sagittarian Sun. It is my hope we find a way to speak to one another with compassion and clarity and recognize we are creating this need for healthy reform together, no matter where we stand/what we believe. You may experience tension at times between what you feel you need to do/be~Pisces’s influence~and what you think you need to do/be~Sagittarius’s field. The sky square opens the way for bridges to open between your heart and mind. A new orientation: the HeartMind.
Spiritually minded/artistically gifted Neptune in community minded Aquarius is in a stimulating sextile to the Sun. We are all being guided to find the people who are of like heartmind and dream up wonder-filled collaborative healing solutions to long-standing problems. Don’t go it alone.
Optimistic enthusiastic Jupiter in pioneering Aries trines our Sun and creates an underlying field of hope, new possibility, confidence in yourself. Lovely***
Focused disciplined Saturn in relational Libra is in an giddy~yes even Saturn knows how to have some fun~ sextile to our Sun so you are able to manifest real and lasting relationships/projects that align with your core principles/goals.
*There is a TRIPLET of aspects to the Moon in this chart which can indicate revelations in unconscious motivations/true feelings/authentic emotional responses that will emerge the whole year long.
Our emotional intuitive Moon aligns with Juno in Libra. This will be a year of aligning with our true soulmates/colleagues/partners on every level both personal and professional. And given the nature of the Scorpio Moon which is also about letting go, you may also have to release/relinquish outdated relations or ways of relating. This new Field requires relationships based in joyful collaboration not obligations. Know if you let go of the past pain you will be greeted with your future joy. Work on releasing mistrust, sometimes an attribute of Scorpio and commit to a practice of TRUSTING.
Moon in probing financial Scorpio is in a forceful creative square to Neptune/Chiron/Vesta in Aquarius which symbolizes evolved focused friendships/alliances. It is my hope that those with the resources turn a corner in terms of where they are putting their wealth and realize the inevitable trend toward a shared abundance for all. This really is a return to what America’s destiny is on planet Earth. Get on board with these evolutionary waves and you will prosper like never before! The more you share the more you prosper no matter what’s in your bank account.
Moon in Scorpio sextile Venus in Capricorn. You can find exciting alliances with others in all things you love and value. The only caution is to make sure your physical/time investments are in alliance with your heart investments.
A DOUBLET of aspects influences Mercury, ruler of our thinking, our new ideas, our commerce, our innovations in technology.
Mercury is conjunct Antares, the star that marks the heart of the Scorpion. I foresee a year of deeply creative writing/film/journalism around all themes transformational and revelatory~Scopio’s gift~chronicling the death of the dying structures of our society. Yet Antares too is about harnessing our creative power as humans to imagine things differently so regeneration is also alive and well and a theme for 2012. Antares is a star often aligned with politics/politicians and secretive abuses of power or sexual energy. We will see further exposes of all aspects of our dying institutions. Obviously this election cycle of 2012 will be a major turning point in our political system and which way America wants to evolve~or devolve~our collective choice.
Mercury is conjunct the North Node. This aspect takes hold in June of 2012. If we have tinkered around the edges of who we want to be and who we want to align with, no more delays! 2012 will be the year to move forward to greater shared intimacy and vulnerability with potentially surprising new partners.
*UNITY aspects: Our planetary guides of Neptune/Pluto/Uranus which function in a more transpersonal way, affecting us globally, under one sky. Their influences are like the waves of a collective tsunami taking us all to new places, quite literally ending up in whole new communities with new friends and a few old ones as well. We become more aware of how linked we really are to all of humanity. Under these astrological influences we are more apt to embrace our unity rather than get caught fighting about diversity.
A cooperative trine between of Saturn and Neptune/Chiron especially exact in January/February 2012 is a splendid thing. We all vow to vow to cooperate for the higher Good. It might not last long but there is hope. Then the wilder revolutionary planetary energies take hold of all of us, each of us, as we experience the further need for radical change in our lives. But this celestial trine~3 is the number of Love~will be a balancing influence to the more tense aspects aligning above us/within us.
Here it comes: the Pluto/Uranus square catapulting the forces of revolution that began in the late 1960’s to further flowering. I am remarkably hopeful and excited about this long-awaited history-making transit. This will be a year of unprecedented uprising grassroots creativity~

I see this uprising as one not based in fear but arising from LOVE. We are all empowered with courage to LIVE and THRIVE as we follow the lead of our authentic nature emerging more fully~Uranus’s gift.
Oh the Joy that arises when we share ourselves authentically with our communities.
