New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Leo
“End of Day” painting by Kathryn Mapes Turner
Are you, or how are you, using the gifts of your innate creativity that come naturally as part of being alive, of being human, living in this wondrous garden of Earth nestled in the mystery of the infinite Universe? It’s a big question, I know, but one to ponder during this NewSolLunar Cycle taking place in sidereal Leo. Leo is the astrological sign linked to creative expression in all forms, careers, individual choice. Think about that. Every choice you make is a chance be yourself, express yourself, lead the world forward. Leo allows us to know the truth of our hearts and to be evermore courageous in expressing that truth.
In addition, a minor grand trine is happening in relationship to this New Moon. A stimulating sextile to Jupiter in Libra to the Sun and Moon brings confidence, amplification, and at times, over-reach to all Jupiter ignites. An equally helpful trine to powerhouse Pluto aids in this being a dynamic four-week period. These aspects help you feel gloriously alive with a new sense of purpose and direction after the almost unbearable recent Mars retrograde of this past summer. It’s onward and forward. Take heart. Feel joy. Sense renewal.
Let’s review briefly what we have been through this summer. The challenging Mars retrograde is now complete (see my notes at the end of this post) and social-change Jupiter and Saturn have also turned direct, shifting much at our cultural levels of community expression. In this dynamic SolLunar Cycle, we will transit the final explosive Mars/Uranus square on September 18th and Mars/South Lunar Node conjunction on September 25, just after the Full Moon. These events have brought to light much about what no longer serves us, releasing old shells of self or ways of being. We all intuitively sense and know more shocks and surprises await us, but hopefully of a more positive nature going forward. Out of death, always, rebirth.
And here’s a new cycle to alert you to that began last week. I delightedly discovered this while mentoring a client about her chart. It’s the upcoming Venus retrograde that will run from October 5 – November 16. However the shadow period of its ingress and message already began on September 2 and will exit its shadow on December 16. In a nutshell, this transit of Venus through early sidereal Libra will give us the chance to create anew with greater balance and harmony, free from all the influences holding us back that we released with the Mars retrograde. These two cycles are intimately linked. Venus asks “what do I desire, what do I care about” and Mars asks “ what actions can I take to manifest those concerns”. I’ll be writing much more about this in the coming weeks.
For this SolLunar Cycle, I am very excited to be highlighting the paintings of my friend, Kathryn Mapes Turner. Kathryn, one of the most optimistic beings I know, is truly one of our living masters of painting on Earth at this time. Her ability to capture the Light, the natural world, and all she chooses to paint is timeless, eternal, full of grace and exceptional skill. Please take time to view her paintings here and her gallery here. Thank you, dear Kathryn.

New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Leo
“A New Day” painting by Kathryn Mapes Turner
Here is a list of New Moon characteristics compliments of my friend/sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza from LunarPlanner:
“Beginning the Sprouting Phase of the Lunar Cycle, a new theme emerges, a new idea or concept sprouts forth. This is an inner message, an impulse expressing from a field of all possibilities deep within the unconscious mind. Often this process is one of discovery, slowly revealing a simple theme over a day or two, or it may be quite clear and specific, even suggesting a major life change. The New Moon is a perfect time for meditation or a quite walk—to go within self and listen.”
Sun September 9
“New Moon in sidereal Leo” compliments of Star Walk
New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Leo: If you use an astronomy app, like Star Walk, you will see that the Sun/Moon are meeting up in Leo, the astronomically-correct sign of this New Moon. This later part of Leo, literally the hind-quarters, is full of either diversionary theatrics, or claiming dramatically what you know to be true. Some of you might feel someone is breathing down your neck as you fight to express your truth. This New Moon encourages you to ask the question: What are you doing with your creative fire and do you need to become more courageous, more ‘on fire’ in expressing your gifts? The answer to that question is always YES!
In addition, a minor grand trine is happening in relationship to this New Moon. A stimulating sextile to Jupiter in Libra to the Sun and Moon brings confidence, amplification, and at times, over-reach to all Jupiter ignites. An equally helpful trine to powerhouse Pluto aids in this being a dynamic, upbeat SolLunar Cycle ahead. These aspects should help you feel gloriously alive with a new sense of purpose and direction after the almost unbearable recent Mars retrograde of this past summer. It’s onward and forward. Take heart. Feel joy. Sense renewal.
Mon September 10
Moon/Ceres conjunction in Virgo: This highly productive union ensures this Monday is a day to focus and succeed in whatever has your attention. Virgo loves everything from clearing up those dust-bunnies and every speck of food left on the floor to healthy juicing to editing a manuscript to long hours joyfully spent in service to others.
Tue September 11
Sun in Leo sextile Jupiter in Libra: This aspect can bring good news into your life and ensures justice for all. It’s an alignment of confidence, exuberance, innate joy. Feel that bubbling up from the spaces within and around you. Give gratitude so as to enhance the effects of this generous sky portal.
Sun in Leo trine Pluto in Sagittarius: This aspect provides a natural vitality and power to all your activities today. It helps you claim your power if you have felt disempowered or overlooked.
Wed September 12
Venus in Libra opposite Uranus in Aries: As this dynamic aspect will happen three times or the next three months (today, October 30 while Venus is in retrograde, then on November 30) take note of what surprises or new impulses arise today. Venus rules our heart chakra and helps guide us with stunning beauty toward creating/choosing a life based in love, ethics, creativity. The opposition to Uranus (the planet of shock, sudden turns of events, true authenticity) can show you how you might be out of alignment with your own heart/goals/desires. That’s what oppositions do. They provide a reflection, a mirror. Look into that mirror today as you will see your own truth, your deeper desires and be wiling to risk it all (Uranus is about taking a risk) to follow your dreams.
Moon/Venus conjunction in Libra: Get one last look at this stunning union in the dusk sky as Venus is about to disappear and merge into the Sun’s light for the next couple of months, leaving it’s Evening Star phase to be reborn as the Morning Star. Its energy is more astrologically beautiful due to its conjunction in sidereal Libra, the sign of beauty, harmony, balance, justice. As is always a wise practice, set intentions and goals under the wonder of its Light for all you need and want to happen in this world.
Thu September 13
Mercury in Leo opposite Neptune in Aquarius: This is a highly imaginative star portal for creative thinking, artistic inspiration, mind-expanding possibilities. It is both spacey and spacious.
Moon/Jupiter conjunction in Libra: This monthly pairing is wildly exuberant in its emotional possibility leading to mania, hysteria, and also confidence, exuberance, increased optimism things are working out. So go with the joy or calm the excesses that can lead to too much of a good thing.
Fri September 14
Moon in Scorpio opposite Juno in Taurus: It’s a good day to focus on financial dealings, budgets, especially in regards to life or business partners. Time to finish your already late taxes? Good day for that, too.
Sat September 15
Moon in Scorpio square Neptune in Aquarius: Scorpio is like diving into deep water and Aquarius is like flying free to soar to new heights. Explore that full range of desire in your life today. Squares imply you might need to make a choice.
First Quarter Moon
“Hope” painting by Kathryn Mapes Turner
Here’s a list of the First Quarter Moon characteristics compliments of my friend/sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza ~ www.lunarplanner.com
“The First Quarter Moon of each lunar cycle draws an external stimulus to initiate action as we move from the inspirational quarter of the lunar cycle into the action quarter. Now is the time to drop all hesitation and take the steps to move forth on what you were inspired about…it is time to now participate in trust and knowing. Trust in the process. Demonstrate this trust in physical action and you will be supported. This time is stressful or traumatic only if action is ignored. Simply, this phase is a time to work.
Sun September 16
First Quarter Moon: Moon in Scorpio square Sun in Leo: You might want to revisit my introduction to this SolLunar Cycle as it’s all about Leo and exploring new dimensions of your creative desires and talents. This action-oriented First Quarter Moon in driven, obsessive Scorpio helps you take yourself seriously and lends impetus to take the next step.
Venus in Libra square Lunar Nodes: This notable aspect is subtle but an important part of the upcoming Venus retrograde cycle I wrote about in this week’s introduction. The Lunar Nodes symbolize where we came from and where we are going next. This square linking the two Nodes provides keen insight or a heart-shift in knowing what that means for you. As Venus rules money and ethics, this can be a day of financial choices based on what you value and want to support.
Mercury in Leo sextile Jupiter in Libra: This naturally optimistic geometry can bring a bit of good news, lends enthusiasm to any task that involves the use of your mind and intellect.
Mon September 17
Moon/Vesta/Saturn conjunction in Sagittarius: The Moon shows up as how we are feeling any given day. And like the Moon, our emotions run the gamut, often leading us from one mood to the next. If you are good at denying your feelings, you may not feel these natural mood swings. If you are overly-emotional, you might get exhausted at time by your own emotional ups and downs. Work toward riding the emotional waves like an accomplished surfer or river-runner and you might just enjoy the ride.
So…this lunar alignment brings out fierce drive, focus, and truthfulness to the forefront. Sagittarius is athletic, futuristic and visionary, and often dogmatic. Teach something you are passionate to someone willing to learn or be that student who wants to be educated.
Tue September 18
Mars in Capricorn square Uranus in Aries: Finale! Watch out for fireworks, explosions, shocking events as warrior Mars makes its final square to combustible Uranus. Beware of accidents or explosions by moving with enhanced awareness, yet also be willing to make a risky move or sudden turn if you are intuitively guided. This aspect is greatly at work in our ongoing political dramas and upcoming elections. Exciting times!
Moon/Pluto conjunction in Sagittarius: Always a day for increased emotional tension, obsession, drive, or interior cleansing that leads to a sudden purging.
Wed September 19
Moon/Mars/South Lunar Node conjunction in Capricorn: Re-read yesterday’s post to understand what’s going on today. The trigger of the fast-moving Moon only increases the tensions or the need to take action. This aspect continues to help you clear away the past, or organize its contents so you can move forward. And it continues to be hugely influential in global events involving investigations, military events, and all our collective institutions.
Thu September 20- Fri September 21
Sun/Mercury conjunction in Virgo trine Juno in Taurus: As these are the last two days of earthly summer (marked by the upcoming Fall Equinox on September 22) this aspect makes for highly productive shifts, like harvesting the garden and raking leaves, changing out your wardrobe to autumn’s clothes, organizing your office and desk. You might find yourself doing these tasks in supportive ways with supportive partners (Juno’s influence).
Sat September 22
Fall Equinox 6:54 pm MST: Our illuminating, life-giving Sun now sits halfway between its summer maximum and the upcoming winter minimum (in the northern hemisphere of Earth). Honor this moment of shift to call forth greater balance in your life. Seek to accept the full range of light and dark that are part of our natural cycles, and your own inner shadow and light. Make peace with the never-ending flow of life’s challenges and gifts, the good days, and the not-so-easy ones.
Sun in Virgo opposite Chiron in Pisces: This annual opposition can stir up old wounds or create a healing crisis within or around you. Chiron is a magical and master healer. The sign of Pisces counsels forgiveness of self and others is always a wise choice. Virgo likes to get to work and improve a situation, and encourages you to watch your thoughts more closely and note how they influence what you allow to enter your life. You have a choice, always.
Moon in Aquarius trine Venus in Libra: This supportive, loving trine calls forth help from a friend, creates an extra-special social gathering or beauty-filled lunch date, and has you buying flowers for another and yourself!
Sun September 23
Mercury in Virgo trine Mars in Capricorn: If you need to focus on mental tasks today, this is very helpful to keep you on target and energized all day. It’s excellent for physical labor as well as sticking to your current goals for greater health and vitality.
Moon/Neptune conjunction in Aquarius: This celebratory alignment ushers in tomorrow’s Full Moon with a desire to spend time with friends, creatively inspiring each other to new possibilities. Take all the time you need to refresh yourself, perhaps in or by water as you bath in the portal of imagination that Neptune always brings.
Happy Full Moon tomorrow!

MARS RETROGRADE NOTES: Even though Mars is complete with its retrograde, the ‘shadow’ period of completion isn’t done until October 6. So these notes are still relevant.
Mars in sidereal Capricorn has been in retrograde: I’ve been alerting you to this aspect since early May when this aspect began on May 12. On June 26, Mars halts and heads backwards (from Earth’s perspective) until August 27, creating a volatile, perhaps challenging summer. It’s important to keep a cool head when surprising events arise.
It’s hard to find some positive words, but let me give it a go: Mars in it’s highest aspect is about the courage to take a stand based on your beliefs, values, what your most deeply want to protect. While in retrograde, you are examining internally what that means to you, encouraging you to live a life of integrity and a willingness to speak your truth when it comes time. The link to the South Lunar Node, tied to our past history, can be bring up the need to revisit what didn’t get said in the past with the hopes of making amends for one’s mistakes. No transits in astrology are ‘bad’. Some are just more challenging, and therefore, growth-producing, and serve us as giant wake-up calls to our own courage of heart.
Here are a few things I’ve already said, with some additions, about one of 2018’s most important astrological events:
Mars turns retrograde on June 26 until August 27 (however the ‘shadow’ period that defines the whole cycle runs form May 12 – October 8) catalyzing a tornadic portal of change and crisis for many and on the world stage. During the time of it’s retrograde, Mars will also be at perihelion (closest to the Earth) so it will literally and energetically be brighter, redder, bolder, more influential in our planetary field.
Mars turning retrograde implies it’s time to not push or be pushy, but be willing to take things more slowly and examine which direction you might ultimately want to go. Some of you might do a remodel of your space, but don’t be surprised or upset if there are delays in the construction process. Some of you will decide to close up shop for good.
This will be a time for many souls to choose to transition back to Spirit, which is already occurring.
Some of you will slow yourselves down physically by an injury or by choosing surgery during this time frame. Old health issues can heat up again (Mars rules inflammation) as symptoms reappear, forcing you to make the next round of changes, researching and opting for healthier choices and behaviors.
From the collective perspective, this promises to be a time of greater drama and revelation, and going to battle as Mars aligns in forceful Capricorn, ruler of our institutions, businesses and the military. As this Mars retrograde is aligned with the South Lunar Node during the entire cycle, much will be brought to light about past abuses of power on all levels, leading the way to institutional reform.
In addition, many weakened ailing infrastructures will give way, possibly leading to loss of life. We are long overdue in addressing this pressing problem. Time to fix what needs fixing.
Huge earth shifts and changes are possible as well, like the ancient granite rocks of the Grand Tetons suddenly and unexpectedly showing fissures and cracks. Earth Oracles abound. Pay attention!
