Full Moon in sidereal Pisces/Virgo
“Moonrise over Jackson Peak” painting by Kathryn Mapes Turner
It’s one thing after another when it comes to the stars! Literally, just as one dynamic cycle completes (Mars retrograde completes on October 6 ~ see my notes at the end of the post) another begins (Venus retrograde begins October 5). Some transits, like Mars, can bring foreboding and stress, while others, like the upcoming Venus transit, can generally bring good fortune and jubilant beginnings or completions.
And it’s Full Moon! The Sun is just getting started in its transit through sidereal (the true astronomical alignment) Virgo for the next 3 weeks. Virgo is a no-nonsense sign, deeply committed to service with an impeccable work ethic. This is always a good time to focus on health goals (especially good for digestive/intestinal cleansing), getting organized, eliminating things that are no longer helpful to your current phase of life. This Pisces Full Moon brings out your softer, more forgiving side, like a snuggly puppy that is trying to get you to play. Let your vulnerability be revealed and shine forth, an advantageous use of this powerful portal. In addition, this Full Moon is being influenced by Mercury (mental activities/technology/communications) and Chiron (linked to both wounds and healing grace). For some, this might be time for technological upgrades due to the breakdown of old equipment. If you are traveling, challenges may arise.
Other keynote events will include Mars making it’s final passage to the South Lunar Node (Yes!) on September 25 and the annual Sun/Ceres conjunction on October 7, highlighting the themes of women’s issues, environmental concerns and catastrophes, and our caregiving roles.
For this SolLunar Cycle, I am grateful to be showcase the paintings of my friend, Kathryn Mapes Turner. Kathryn, one of the most optimistic compassionate beings I know, is truly one of our living masters of painting on Earth at this time. Her ability to capture the Light, the natural world, and all she chooses to paint is timeless, eternal, full of grace and exceptional skill. Please take time to view her paintings here and her gallery here. Thank you, dear Kathryn.

Full Moon in sidereal Pisces/Virgo
“As with Breath” painting by Kathryn Mapes Turner
Here is a brief synopsis of the Full Moon characteristics that hold true for every Full Moon from my from my friend and sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza at Lunar Planner.
“The Full Moon marks the point of coition in the lunar cycle, the climax, the point of excitement, a time of celebration. The day just after the Full Moon is a time for the realization of the theme to emerge, of what the activities of the first half of the lunar cycle, culminating into the enthusiasm of the Full Moon, are really about. Relax and allow this realization to occur. There is no need to force it as it surfaces on its own.”

Full Moon: Moon/Chiron in sidereal Pisces/Sun in Virgo: The Sun is just getting started in its transit through sidereal (true astronomical alignment) Virgo for the next 3 weeks. Tue September 25
Mars/South Lunar Node finale: I breath a sigh of relief as this transit completes, but I am also aware we are not in the clear yet, especially on the global front (see the Mars retrograde notes at the end of this post). Maybe you are an at-home pundit like me, in constant awe of the unfolding political dramas, at times dreadful, at times, even comical. Warrior and truthful Mars has been transiting Capricorn, so your body may have undergone some major changes this past summer. Or perhaps you have severed old relationships for good and for the good. As Mars makes it’s final crossing to the South Lunar Node linked to the past, dynamic energies are taking shape to help you move forward. Feel a sense of relief that you survived or are coming out the other side of something big. Congratulations on your focused dedication to thrive in these shocked-filled times of our collective awakening.
Sun in Virgo square Vesta/Saturn in Sagittarius: With this annual square of Sun to stern Saturn, you might feel challenged by responsibilities or stressed by all you are balancing in your day to day world. You may want to run away. This is a heavier, leaden energy, so make peace with that and plow through your frustrations. The influence of focusing Vesta can assist you to push through the fear, dread or doubt and just get moving to get many things accomplished today.
Moon in Pisces opposite Mercury/Ceres in Virgo: The fluid Moon in Pisces helps to soften the intensity of the above challenging transits, but can also lead to escapist tendencies. With Mercury/Ceres, someone might hold you accountable in honest conversations.
Wed September 26 – Thu September 27
I merged these days as the following aspects are building on Wednesday and completing on Thursday.
Vesta/Saturn conjunction in Sagittarius: Extraordinary focus and determination are part of this slow-moving aspect that finds completion today. A project may be coming to an end, or beginning, or launched to the next phase. Truth-tellers and whistle-blowers find the courage to speak. Interestingly, Vesta rules sexual energy and Saturn rules the law. This can be a day of testimony for many.
Moon/Uranus in Aries square Mars/South Lunar Node: If you read astrology news, you are probably well-versed in the red-flag warning of a Mars/Uranus linkage, often leading to volatility, anxiety, uncertainty, breakthroughs. This aspect makes for restless nights, dreams of turmoil and conflict, or late night spontaneous activities.
Mercury/Ceres conjunction in Virgo: The mind wants to focus on topics of health, nutrition, analytical detail, writing, editing, environmental cleanup, recipes/food projects, all options under this potent conjunction.
Sun in Virgo trine Mars in Capricorn: This naturally productive trine of organizing Virgo to orderly and successful Mars in Capricorn is helping you in your work environments or with professional collaborations.
Moon in Aries opposite Venus in Libra: Pay attention to what your heart knows today as the independent Moon in Aries highlights relational Venus in Libra, soon to turn retrograde on October 5. Insights are emerging about relationship patterns, desires, and choices to be made.
Fri September 28
Moon in Aries opposite Jupiter in sidereal Libra: Jupiter will soon be completing it’s astronomical transit of sidereal Libra that began in the autumn of 2017. Collectively, this has brought forth the need to focus on issues of justice, fairness under the law (or lack of it) as well as activating new relationship patterns and business alliances. Today’s Moon trigger in initiating Aries is like a spark igniting further fires or projects or offering an internal certainty about which direction to take.
Sat September 29
Moon/Juno conjunction in Taurus: This is a good day to visit with any financial associates/guides or examine earthly goals with your beloveds.
Grand trine in Earth signs: Moon in Taurus/Mars in Capricorn/Sun in Virgo: It’s easy to feel together on the physical plane with this grounded, stabilizing, results-oriented triangle. Much can be accomplished or just sit back and appreciate your recent endeavors and labors.
Sun September 30
Moon in Taurus trine Mercury in Virgo: Like yesterday’s successful and productive energies, this aspect highlights the use of your mind (Mercury) in effective ways with good communications and news all around.
Mon October 1
Moon in Gemini opposite Vesta/Saturn in Sagittarius: When the Moon shifts into Gemini for a 3-day stint, it’s easier to articulate what you feel or you can feel split emotionally, making you indecisive. Today’s challenging opposition to Saturn/Vesta can manifest as a depressing, serious kind of day or a day in which you are able to face your responsibilities head on and find solutions. Writers, send our those queries today.
Last Quarter Moon
“Lily Pads” painting by Kathryn Mapes Turner
Here is a description of the qualities of the Last Quarter Moon phase compliments of my friend and sidereal colleague, Nick Anthony Fiorenza at Lunar Planner:
“This phase completes with our Inner Needs surfacing to consciousness, to become aware of what is important to self and what is not. Knowing now what our Truth is, it is time to consciously live it. Doing so provides a choice for others to also live theirs. Changing allows us to spiral to a new octave of experience—one that will eventually sprout in the next lunar cycle to come.”
Tue October 2
Last Quarter Moon: Moon in Gemini square Sun/Ceres in Virgo: The current Sun/Ceres conjunction continues to highlight concerns linked to the women’s rights, environment, food concerns, our elders or children. The Gemini Moon is excellent for multi-tasking and feeling the buzz of communicating with many people throughout the day. The square aspect calls forth crisis, turning points and decision-making.
Mercury in Virgo square Pluto in Sagittarius: This tense square of mental Mercury to delving Pluto heightens your mental focus, paranoia, ability to investigate a situation, uncover secrets, speak your honest truth in raw detail. Yes, it is intense today.
Wed October 3
Moon/North Lunar Node in Cancer opposite Mars/South Lunar Node in Capricorn: The motherly (or parentally) private, secretive, family-oriented, tribal Moon in Cancer crosses the futuristic North Node helping families move forward from recent challenges. It also catalyzes defensive, combative Mars so emotions can run the gamut today in regards to past conflicts still surfacing to be cleared. You can also use this dynamic wisely to clear out your home/office of clutter or old historical objects you are ready to release, perhaps passing them forward to the next generation.
Thu October 4
Moon in Cancer sextile Sun/Ceres in Virgo square Venus in Libra: This last stimulating sextile before the next New Moon is good for finishing things with enthusiasm and ease. As Venus is turning retrograde tomorrow until November 16, make note of emerging heart-goals, creative projects, financial plans (Venus’s domains) and set some intentions for how you want to finish out this year.
Fri October 5
Venus in sidereal Libra turns retrograde: Venus turns inward to a more reflective phase (retrograde) around noon today until November 16, with the shadow period of integration done by December 16. This transit takes place in astronomical Libra as you can see in this diagram.
“Venus and Jupiter in sidereal Libra from Star Walk”
Here are some questions you might want to ponder to use this transit effectively. How do I feel about my relationship to my creativity/artistic goals, to money, to my values/ethics and to all my relationships? How do I want my intimate relationship to be? Am I being treated fairly, treating others fairly, and is there reciprocity in my relationships? How do I bring more balance in to my life in ways that are meaningful for me? Do I have unfulfilled creative goals I am ready to dive into?
And remember to contemplate the most important relationship, the one you have with yourSelf. I recently re-discovered this wise quote from “The Book of Runes” by Ralph Blum which highlights the relationship between orienting to a more ego-based self or aligning with your higher wisdom Self:
“For the Self is the self’s only friend And the self is the Self’s only foe.”
Grand trine in Fire signs: Moon in Leo/Saturn in Sagittarius/Uranus in Aries: This aspect can fill you with enthusiasm and ignite you with inspiration. It’s also volatile, but in a good way, so stay grounded amidst your energetic passions.
Sat October 6
Mars retrograde shadow period completes: We have arrived! It’s a wrap for the overly-assertive, super-sized, brutal and revealing Mars retrograde of this past summer. That’s really all I want to say. You can read my notes below about the ways this may have manifested, but thankfully, this phase is done (for now!).
Moon/Pallas Athene in Leo opposite Neptune in Aquarius: This dynamic trio inspires creativity in general from the smallest to the largest projects, including organizing your garage or home, designing a painting, working collaboratively with others. Enjoy the sparkle of fairy dust, too, that it brings to life all around.
Sun October 7
Sun/Ceres conjunction in Virgo: This is the finale of the annual moment when our Sun aligns with Ceres, a dwarf planet linked to the Divine Feminine, women, children, animals, food, nurturing, care-giving. All these realms are highlighted globally and locally. It’s certainly a spectacular day to celebrate the harvest season or complete winter preparations for your garden/land.
Moon in Virgo opposite Chiron square Saturn/Vesta: As this balsamic Moon (referring to old, completing) is in helpful Virgo activating compassionate Chiron and serious Saturn, a mini-challenge, emotional crisis may appear that needs to be addressed or fixed. Or you might just feel vulnerable, lonely, sensitive. Curl up, pull in like an animal would as you prepare for the New Moon tomorrow.
If I post late for the upcoming New Moon late, it is because I am in transit so thank you for your patience!

MARS RETROGRADE NOTES: Even though Mars is complete with its retrograde, the ‘shadow’ period of completion isn’t done until October 6. So these notes are still relevant.
Mars in sidereal Capricorn has been in retrograde: I’ve been alerting you to this aspect since early May when this aspect began on May 12. On June 26, Mars halts and heads backwards (from Earth’s perspective) until August 27, creating a volatile, perhaps challenging summer. It’s important to keep a cool head when surprising events arise.
It’s hard to find some positive words, but let me give it a go: Mars in it’s highest aspect is about the courage to take a stand based on your beliefs, values, what your most deeply want to protect. While in retrograde, you are examining internally what that means to you, encouraging you to live a life of integrity and a willingness to speak your truth when it comes time. The link to the South Lunar Node, tied to our past history, can be bring up the need to revisit what didn’t get said in the past with the hopes of making amends for one’s mistakes. No transits in astrology are ‘bad’. Some are just more challenging, and therefore, growth-producing, and serve us as giant wake-up calls to our own courage of heart.
Here are a few things I’ve already said, with some additions, about one of 2018’s most important astrological events:
Mars turns retrograde on June 26 until August 27 (however the ‘shadow’ period that defines the whole cycle runs form May 12 – October 8) catalyzing a tornadic portal of change and crisis for many and on the world stage. During the time of it’s retrograde, Mars will also be at perihelion (closest to the Earth) so it will literally and energetically be brighter, redder, bolder, more influential in our planetary field.
Mars turning retrograde implies it’s time to not push or be pushy, but be willing to take things more slowly and examine which direction you might ultimately want to go. Some of you might do a remodel of your space, but don’t be surprised or upset if there are delays in the construction process. Some of you will decide to close up shop for good.
This will be a time for many souls to choose to transition back to Spirit, which is already occurring.
Some of you will slow yourselves down physically by an injury or by choosing surgery during this time frame. Old health issues can heat up again (Mars rules inflammation) as symptoms reappear, forcing you to make the next round of changes, researching and opting for healthier choices and behaviors.
From the collective perspective, this promises to be a time of greater drama and revelation, and going to battle as Mars aligns in forceful Capricorn, ruler of our institutions, businesses and the military. As this Mars retrograde is aligned with the South Lunar Node during the entire cycle, much will be brought to light about past abuses of power on all levels, leading the way to institutional reform.
In addition, many weakened ailing infrastructures will give way, possibly leading to loss of life. We are long overdue in addressing this pressing problem. Time to fix what needs fixing.
Huge earth shifts and changes are possible as well, like the ancient granite rocks of the Grand Tetons suddenly and unexpectedly showing fissures and cracks. Earth Oracles abound. Pay attention!
