REM sleep patterns aid in the process by which creativity forms associative elements into new combinations that are useful for realigning one’s life. This state of sleep is also associated with the ability to have vivid recall of dreams, and in newborns, is essential to developing brains.
With the coming Aquarian New Moon on March 4 at 1:47 pm MST, the REM awakening (revolutionary evolutionary momentum) of 2011 continues: we are dreaming big, realigning ourselves into new combinations, and surely our brains are expanding in new and miraculous ways.

When I teach astrology to young students, or older, I speak often of this concept: ~AS ABOVE~SO BELOW. This phrase comes from the opening of The Emerald Tablet by Hermes Trismegistus, the ultimate alchemist and wise teacher of writing, astrology, and other arts. The key to this phrase, which many believe holds the key to all our spiritual/physical mysteries is this: “That which is above is the same as that which is below…Macrocosmos is the same as microcosmos. The Universe is the same as God, God is the same as man, man is the same as the cell, the cell is the same as the atom, and on and on, infinitum.” When I talk about astrology, I use the scientific concept of fractals, which essentially describes what Hermes was attempting to shine light upon. Fractals: Patterns repeat themselves over time and space. Everything in nature is a patterned language, and astrology is one language that articulates those connections.
When we astrologers talk about certain alignments in the heavens, these aren’t just poetic musings or fortune telling, but an attempt to document the literal energetic shifts happening in the heavens that have a very real impact on our lives down here on Earth~AS ABOVE~SO BELOW~This is no different than a weather woman telling us of an approaching tornado, or a weather man alerting us of a coming heat wave. As astrologers, we are reading the cosmic weather. But just like weather reporters, we can only guess at trends, issue planetary warnings, yet we never know the wild outcomes coming our way. That is always in the hands of Nature, always guided by a far deeper Mystery than any system, scientific or metaphysical/spiritual, can describe or comprehend.
With the coming New Moon situated in sidereal Aquarius, we will see an acceleration of all things revolutionary/evolutionary. Aquarius is the astrological sign of reformers, visionaries, of caring for all of humanity, of values based on love for all. Because we aren’t there yet (the Aquarian age is still approximately 400 years away from a sidereal astronomical perspective) our human population at this time is an odd combination of old school/new school values. It manifests as our ongoing political discussion about traditional values (going back/trying to stay the same) versus progressive values (going forward/recognizing change is the one constant in the universe). Or we have people whose values are based on hate and fear of others, or others whose values are based acceptance, compassion, inclusion for all. It is the dictator billionaires versus the common folk. It is the argument: humans are the masters of Earth, or humans engaged in a shared citizenry with all the other species cohabiting the Earth must be wise stewards.It is my belief that eventually outdated, unkind, prejudiced ideas will disappear….like marriage is solely between a woman and a man, or that humans are higher on the food chain of wisdom and compassion than our animal others, or that the Earth is an unconscious mass of rubble we are here to exploit and tame.We can expect both sides to get louder in the coming months, some stating their views as absolute truth, or other’s pointing the way to cooperative solutions.
Each time that many planets coagulate in Aquarius, like now, humans are inclined to take leaps of compassionate imagination and clear-minded actions in advancing our world towards a more inclusive view of humanity. This particular New Moon is also aligned with Mars, also in Aquarius, the planet of passion, activism, standing your ground. As the ruler of the blood, Mars can have to do with cleansing the old stories out of our bloodlines, literally catalyzing the desire to detox the blood through dietary shifts like drinking more chloryphyll/greens, which you may have been feeling strongly since January. Witness what just occurred during the very hot Mars period from late January/February in the Middle East uprisings when 30 years of domination was toppled in 18 days.
In the past few weeks, another effect you might be experiencing as a result of the cosmic energies is a sense that your nervous system is on high alert, leading to symptoms of anxiety, sleep disturbances, irritability, and a feeling of buzzing, like you are being electronically upgraded but from who knows where. This is all about Uranus, ruler of the nervous system and Aquarius both. Currently, Uranus is in square (tension/decision making) to the Lunar Nodes which identify where you have been and where you are heading. Uranus, as the planetary ruler of surprises and upheavels, might show up as a sudden turn of events in your favor (or accidents if you aren’t paying attention) and startling new alliances that are luring you toward your future dreams. Intensifying this, the Lunar Nodes are also aligned with the Galactic Nodes, which happens once ever 18.6 years. This means our personal stories/lives are aligning with the larger Universe Story as the wise, wise Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme call it in their book by the same name (one of my all time favorite texts). You might be asking yourself, as you did in college, who am I and what is my best contribution? This aspect has been increasing internal tension that something BIG is shifting in your life, not to waste time/diffuse your energy, but stay focused in a whole new lazer-like way, astounding yourself at your own productivity and passion. Use this Uranian/Aquarian awakening moment for your own leaps in consciousness and creativity.

Did you know that on February 4-5 2011, the Dalai Lama for the first time offered the initiation for Buddha Maitreya, the 5th Buddha who is preparing humanity to live in a new cycle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7E1C7QNahKA). Maitreya is considered to be the future Buddha, and unlike the former Buddha which has helped eliminate suffering in humans, Maitreya is the Buddha of Joy, Love and Compassion. In researching this, I discovered that he is also referred to as the Water Bearer, just like the constellation of Aquarius the Waterbearer. It seems the 5th Buddha is linked to the Aquarian age, both carrying the wisdom Urn and teaching us the ways of clear, clean emotion. This message,in my opinion, resonates with the stories of the second coming of Christ,which is the really message of the joy of resurrection that follows our pain and struggle. All these religious stories tell the same story, the universal story, the story of our awakening from being a humanity of creating/recreating suffering, to a humanity based in joy, love and compassion, always an individual choice.
