New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Sagittarius
“A New Year” watercolor by Sue Cedarholm
Our New SolLunar Cycle begins at sunset on January 5 and heralds the celestial beginning for 2019. This New Moon in sidereal Sagittarius is the first of the Eclipses of 2019. Here’s an Eclipse link to learn more. Eclipses happen because our Sun and Moon line up with the Lunar Nodes, points which symbolize our past selves and acquired wisdom (South Node) and our future selves and still-to-be-learned wisdom (North Node). Eclipses can provide an actual energetic severing from our past while opening doors for our future lives.
In both of January’s Eclipses (New Moon on January 5 and Full Moon on January 20) the Sun is linked to the South Node which implies it is essential we integrate and appreciate all we have become, to honor what we have learned from the full range of our experience. From a place of love and acceptance, we can step into the future that is calling to us, especially on the Total Lunar Eclipse of January 20, visible from all of North and South America. On that day, the Moon in sidereal Cancer aligns with the North Node, further weaving together our personal timelines/lifetimes in new configurations full of astounding possibilities. A wonderful way to begin 2019!
Electrical Uranus turns direct on January 6 and can lead to breakdowns or break throughs. Now all our major planets are in direct motion for a number of weeks creating forward momentum for all. There are some challenging and fierce energies we navigate during these two weeks as both Sun and Mercury are in the vicinity of Saturn and Pluto, often considered planets with heavier, more serious overtones. But that also makes this a very productive period with much truth-telling.
Notice Jupiter and Venus in the early dawn hours getting cozier and closer during this two week period as they head toward their exact conjunction on Tuesday, January 22. Wake up earlier than usual to witness its wonder, meditating under this very positive, inspiring alignment.
Thank you, friend, Sue Cedarholm, for allowing me to post your beautiful and evocative winter watercolors, perfect for this time of year. Be sure to visit Sue’s websites for her Watercolor Diary and Inspired Wild Designs to view or purchase something from her many creative galleries.

New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Sagittarius
“Crescent Moon and Venus” watercolor by Sue Cedarholm
Here is a list of New Moon characteristics compliments of my friend/sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza from LunarPlanner:
“Beginning the Sprouting Phase of the Lunar Cycle, a new theme emerges, a new idea or concept sprouts forth. This is an inner message, an impulse expressing from a field of all possibilities deep within the unconscious mind. Often this process is one of discovery, slowly revealing a simple theme over a day or two, or it may be quite clear and specific, even suggesting a major life change. The New Moon is a perfect time for meditation or a quite walk—to go within self and listen.”

Sat January 5
New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Sagittarius: This time of year, you can see that our illuminating Sun is transiting the constellation of Sagittarius, the sign of truth, vision, courageous leadership, optimism, and so much more. It is like a bolt of extra sunshine piercing the heart of winter’s darkness as we near a new birth. The Moon joins up with the Sun, and both are closely aligned with transformational, deep-digging Pluto launching us into what will surely be an historic month and year ahead for our planet and planetary dramas. If you made New Year’s resolutions, the influence of life-coach Sagittarius is always helpful to stay on track and feel fired up in those goals.

Sun January 6 ~ Epiphany ~ Day of Gifts
Epiphany, in some traditions, marks the end of the HolyDays of winter. Ask for and receive a gift, often arriving out of the blue, that honors your enduring strength of heart, mind, body and will.
Uranus turns direct: This chaotic and catalytic turning point happens midday, amping up nervous energy, accident-proneness or creating a feeling of electricity and exciting possibilities. Now all major planets are moving forward for the next few weeks, encouraging you to do the same with your life. Uranus says take risks, be bold, experiment, follow your own passions and rhythms. Be YOU in all your vivid uniqueness.
Moon/Pluto conjunction in Sagittarius: Right on the heels of yesterday’s New Moon, today the Moon makes its monthly transit across Pluto. This alignment has a purging quality to it, even in terms of sudden physical/emotional symptoms taking you down or inward. It’s all for the better as Pluto is all about cleansing what we no longer need, eventually creating healthier lives. Let go.
Moon/South Lunar Node in Capricorn: This, too, can trigger releases from your past. Note your feelings and moods, take time to sift and sort old feelings if they arise as you push past stagnation or attachments from a time gone by.
Mon January 7
Moon in Capricorn: As the Moon makes its way through Capricorn, you can feel more organized, serious, ambitious. As a tense Mercury/Mars square is building today, exact tomorrow, use the natural discipline of Capricorn for calming practices like restorative yoga, a long walk with a friend or pet so your nervous system is settled, ready for tomorrow’s intensity.
Tue January 8
Mercury in Sagittarius square Mars in Pisces: This aspect is extremely direct, lacks tactfulness, while also being forthright and honest. Feelings can be hurt and accidents are possible so be very careful while driving or using equipment.
Moon/Vesta conjunction in Capricorn: Think of an exceptionally focused ballet dancer or martial artist, moving with a perfection of form and focus. With this alignment, that can be you today as you move through your day.
Wed January 9
Moon in Aquarius square Venus in Scorpio: Tensions in friendships may arise temporarily in regards to the different styles and ways we show we love and care. Or you can feel your own internal tension between wanting to hold on or needing to let go.
Thu January 10
Moon/Neptune conjunction in Aquarius: This highly creative and spiritually-evolved aspect can open your heart further to unconditional love or show you how you are still evolving in terms of accepting a situation you cannot control. This monthly union makes for magical, colorful, fantastic dreams, too.
Fri January 11
Sun/Pluto conjunction in Sagittarius: Once a year, our local Sun crosses paths with Pluto, which lives at the far reaches of our solar system. This aspect brings catharsis, both positive or challenging, depending on what life is asking of you right now. People can get extremely stubborn or willful in regards to accomplishing things or trying to control others. It’s intense and there’s no way around it. Walk through its creative fires of transformation. You might just feel weird or off for much of the day as deep-churning shifts are happening you will understand at a future time.
Sat January 12
Moon/Mars conjunction in Pisces: When the emotional Moon collides with willful passionate Mars, sparks can fly or tempers can flare. The softening influence of watery Pisces mutes this a bit, and can push some into addictive behaviors.
First Quarter Moon
“Winter Solstice Crescent Moon” watercolor by Sue Cedarholm
Here’s a list of the First Quarter Moon characteristics compliments of my friend/sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza ~ www.lunarplanner.com
“The First Quarter Moon of each lunar cycle draws an external stimulus to initiate action as we move from the inspirational quarter of the lunar cycle into the action quarter. Now is the time to drop all hesitation and take the steps to move forth on what you were inspired about…it is time to now participate in trust and knowing. Trust in the process. Demonstrate this trust in physical action and you will be supported. This time is stressful or traumatic only if action is ignored. Simply, this phase is a time to work.
Sun January 13
First Quarter Moon: Moon in Pisces square Sun in Sagittarius: As this is the first action-taking First Quarter Moon of 2019, you might be motivated to set the stage for next steps, or begin your new program/project today. Moon in Pisces is emotional and receives information intuitively and Sun in Sagittarius is the thinker and seeks knowledge. Utilize both ways of knowing today.
Jupiter in Scorpio square Neptune in Aquarius: This rare aspect unfolds in three acts, beginning today, returning mid-June and completing mid-September. It is one of the important longer-range transits of 2019. Expansive and optimistic Jupiter makes an action-provoking square to compassionate, time-t0-reimagine possibilities, Neptune. As this tense but highly creative dynamic happens in the signs of community-minded, futuristic Aquarius and Scorpio, confrontations with old power structures and ways of being will take place.
Mercury/Saturn conjunction in Sagittarius: You may experience a bout of severe pessimism when these two planets align. Or you can use its focused energy in optimistic Sagittarius to align your thoughts with what you want and steer clear of old doubts. This requires mental discipline at times, like going to the gym of your mind and fiercely concentrating on the task/goals at hand so as to avoid injury to yourself and those around you.
Mon January 14
Moon/Uranus conjunction in Aries: After the dynamic and challenging aspects of yesterday, this alignment says time to charge ahead and take the risk you have been contemplating. By risk I simply mean doing things differently than you have always done them in the past. Time to experiment, even if that’s only taking a small step in a new direction. That is often the most courageous step of all.
Tue January 15
Sun enters sidereal Capricorn: Capricorns exhibit an almost impossible endurance and drive to succeed. Think Mountain Goats and Big Horn Sheep scaling impossible ledges. This time of year, for four weeks as the Sun transits Capricorn, you can tap into your own reserves of strength and determination to forge ahead.
Moon in Aries trine Saturn/Mercury in Sagittarius: This aspects merges intuitive hits with mental brilliance in a symbiotic way and can help you accomplish a multitude of tasks today.
Wed January 16
Sun/South Node conjunction in Capricorn: Once a year the Sun crosses the South Node, an energetic point linked to the past we came from and all we have learned. Take time today in celebration and gratitude for your endurance and all the ways you have accomplished so much in your life, no matter your age. Then reflect on what is truly finished and what you wish to close the door upon so you can walk through those new doors opening with remarkable speed and unfolding possibilities.
Moon/Juno conjunction in Aries/Taurus: This monthly alignment tends to seek partnership, even if it’s just for a walk with a friend, a dinner date, swapping stories with a close partner, teaming up with a co-worker to get the job done.
Thu January 17
Moon in Taurus opposite Venus/Jupiter in Scorpio: This powerhouse aspect naturally helps you focus on your financial and physical goals, and your needs and desires in your intimate relationship. Oppositions can have both a polarizing aspect, like a stand-off, or be a glorious dance of opposites attracting, and maybe a little bit of both. You might yearn for the resources to make a big purchase or make one today.
Fri January 18
Sun in Capricorn square Uranus in Aries: This volatile, spontaneous action-taking square hits our planetary field today. Aries moves suddenly and Capricorn is more strategic before the next step is taken. These countering influences are at work on us today but the square aspect usually means action is needed in some way.
Mercury/Pluto conjunction in Sagittarius: When Mercury and Pluto collude, like today, you can be sure secrets are being investigated, even uncovered and exposed. It is a mentally-obsessive alignment so it is helpful to have your meditation/mental health tools ready to use on a moment’s notice so you steer clear of paranoia or darker thoughts.
Sun in Capricorn sextile Chiron in Pisces: This helpful energy offers a softening effect, manifesting as a healing touch or kind word from another or to yourself. On a practical note, make a vow to drink more clear, pure water to keep your cells happy so they are better able to cleanse your body of daily toxins and rebuild healthy new tissue. These processes are happening every second of everyday of your life. Now that’s a miracle.
Venus in Scorpio trine Mars in Chiron: Venus (what you want) and Mars (how to make it happen) make an optimistic trine today in emotional water signs. This can bring clarity about what you feel and makes for supportive conversations between the sexes. A perfect day to visit the hot springs in holy, joyful communion with vibrant, life-giving nature.
Sat January 19
Moon in Gemini opposite Saturn in Sagittarius square Mars in Pisces: This tense T-square can be highly productive in mental output yet also creates doubt and second-guessing. It precedes tomorrow’s dynamic Total Lunar Eclipse which is already agitating us personally and collectively. Balance your Being practices (like breathing, sauntering with your pet) with your doing practices of productive output and goal-setting so you walk this tightrope with grace and skill.
Happy Full Moon tomorrow!
