New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Scorpio
“Honey Bee” detail of painting by Alissa Davies
Dare I give voice to the hope of the returning light at the end of this current tunnel? Writing about this upcoming SolLunar Cycle brought a sigh of relief and gratitude to my body/mind/spirit as we complete one celestial year and enter the new one on Winter Solstice, December 21. Not all of the energies are gentler and kinder, of course, but quite a few are.
In 2018, many people navigated tough personal challenges and experienced (and continue to process) unfathomable and natural losses, during the retrograde periods of Mars (May-September), Venus (October-November) and then Mercury (November-to now). Now, only one major planet, Uranus, is in retrograde and it will turn direct on January 6, 2019 leading to exciting breakthroughs and an easing of tensions as we enter 2019.
During this rough patch, some people have, not surprisingly, pondered this question: Which side of the Veil do I want to be on, serve from, going forward given what’s happening on planet Earth at this time? It’s been a year of deep reckoning and life-changing decision-making. May you know and feel protected in your networks of earthly and heavenly support.
Our next SolLunar Cycle/New Moon takes place in sidereal (astronomically correct) Scorpio. This part of out heavenly story is deep, at times, dark, full of intrigue, and power plays yet also helps us cut to the rock bottom core of truth, both internally and in our world. Scorpio pressures us to release facades and show our true faces, so we can live authentic lives of enormous creativity, depth and wonder. Notice, too, Mercury (no longer retrograde) straddling the Chelae, or claws of the Scorpion. The Chelae are symbolic of being delivered from our past karma to our future dharma, examining what we have learned, might still need to learn along the way on the unique path of incarnation.
Thank you, old and new readers and friends, who reached out to me after my last post and let me know these EarthSky Oracle posts have assisted you over the last 12 years since I first started writing them. I am grateful I shared my vulnerabilities and self-doubts as part of my own retrograde processes (!) and I receive gratefully your kind words and support. THANK YOU. I appreciate YOU!
Thank you, beloved Alissa Davies, for letting me post some of your latest work. I am intrigued with the organic nature of Alissa’s paintings. I feel she miraculously paints the biological complexity of the full range of human emotion, and so much more. The brightness and darkness of her work is perfect for this SolLunar Cycle. Here’s the link to view more of Alissa’s diverse art, including her sculptures and very fun kid truck paintings.

New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Scorpio
“Picture This” painting Alissa Davies
Here is a list of New Moon characteristics compliments of my friend/sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza from LunarPlanner:
“Beginning the Sprouting Phase of the Lunar Cycle, a new theme emerges, a new idea or concept sprouts forth. This is an inner message, an impulse expressing from a field of all possibilities deep within the unconscious mind. Often this process is one of discovery, slowly revealing a simple theme over a day or two, or it may be quite clear and specific, even suggesting a major life change. The New Moon is a perfect time for meditation or a quite walk—to go within self and listen.”

New SolLunar Cycle in astronomical Scorpio compliments of Star Walk
New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Scorpio: From the above photo, you can see our new New Moon takes place in sidereal (astronomically correct) Scorpio. This part of out heavenly story is deep, at times, dark, full of intrigue, and power plays and also helps us cut to the rock bottom core of truth, both internally and in our world. Scorpio pressures us to release facades and show our true faces so we can live authentic lives of enormous creativity, depth and wonder. Notice, too, Mercury (no longer retrograde) straddling the Chelae, or claws of the Scorpion. The Chelae are symbolic of being delivered from our past karma to our future dharma, examining what we have learned, or might still need to learn, on the unique path of incarnation.
Mars/Neptune conjunction in Aquarius: It’s only once every two years that these two planets unite, so this conjunction is a big deal! Neptune symbolizes the field of our intentions/prayers/imagination and Mars always leads us to take action. Use this time to set in motion two-year goals (Mars’s revolution) using the power of your imagination (Neptune) to step into your new creative field of intentions, projects, relationships, spiritual and earthly practices. This lineup takes place sidereal Aquarius, greatly influencing choices all of humanity is making as a one tribe, united. Sadly, some fear-based humans will use this energy to huddle together to deceive and manipulate others, the shadow side of Neptune. But keep the faith and trust (attributes of Neptune) that deceptions will be brought to light in the end.
Sat December 8
Grand Trine Water: Mercury in Scorpio/North Lunar Node in Cancer/Chiron in Pisces: This aspect brings clairvoyant insights and makes for deep listening and emotional support. It helps people feel open to express their vulnerabilities or regain trust after an upsetting incident.
Moon/Saturn conjunction in Sagittarius: Harsh truths can come to light or you might feel focused in a more serious way, Saturn’s nature.
Sun December 9
Moon/Pluto conjunction in Sagittarius: This monthly pairing is often explosive or super-driven to succeed. It can be highly competitive as well.
Mon December 10 – Tue December 11
Moon/South Lunar Node/Vesta conjunction in Capricorn: The South Lunar Node is often linked to aspects of our past, where we have come from and what we learned and need to remember we learned. Vesta brings great focus, especially in ambitious Capricorn. Tackle your closets and cupboards and get rid of stuff, journal about your past and lessons learned, and connect with elders if they are still alive. Evoke their stories and wisdom with your care and listening.
Wed December 12
Moon in Capricorn sextile Sun in Scorpio: Accomplishing goals with ease or feeling really together and organized are part of this wonderful energy.
Sun in Scorpio quincunx Juno in Aries: The tension of this aspect involves the signs of being independent (Aries) and desiring greater intimacy and bonding (Scorpio). As Juno is involved, this might involve challenges with your core partnerships, both work and personal. Sometimes even a small tweak in honesty and how you relate will shift everything in a more positive direction.
Thu December 13
Ceres in Libra trine Neptune in Aquarius: This rare, helpful and happy trine between Earth Mother, Ceres and uplifting, visionary Neptune bodes well for the collective health and well-being of Earth, for humans and all other forms of life. They are in justice-bringing Libra and future-trend Aquarius, so new alliances are forming and more and more people are choosing the ways of compassionate clarity and making better food and environmental choices (Ceres’s domain). Give thanks to the abundant Earth today in ways that speak to your personal heart and gratitudes.
Moon in Aquarius square Mercury in Scorpio: Honest, even confrontational conversations with friends or community members can be part of this dynamic.
Fri December 14
Moon/Mars/Neptune in Aquarius: Remember that this SolLunar Cycle started the same day as the Mars/Neptune two-year beginning. Today’s lunar trigger lights a fire to the dreams you set in motion or can bring significant others into your life at this key juncture.
First Quarter Moon
“Figuring out Falling” painting by Alissa Davies
Here’s a list of the First Quarter Moon characteristics compliments of my friend/sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza ~ www.lunarplanner.com
“The First Quarter Moon of each lunar cycle draws an external stimulus to initiate action as we move from the inspirational quarter of the lunar cycle into the action quarter. Now is the time to drop all hesitation and take the steps to move forth on what you were inspired about…it is time to now participate in trust and knowing. Trust in the process. Demonstrate this trust in physical action and you will be supported. This time is stressful or traumatic only if action is ignored. Simply, this phase is a time to work.
Sat December 15
First Quarter Moon: Moon in Aquarius square Sun in Scorpio: Finding ways to join with others in shared goals and setting in motion new plans are possible today. Important financial decisions or turning points are set in motion.
Moon/Chiron conjunction in Pisces: This monthly pairing can make some folks teary as it calls forth a sense of vulnerability, being frightened or feeling insecure. It softens hearts and makes people better listeners, too.
Sun December 16
Venus in Libra sextile Saturn in Sagittarius: This harmonious activation of loving Venus to commitment-seeking Saturn brings exciting energy to budding relationships and partnerships, creative projects, and good news in regards to justice, fairness, equality.
Moon in Pisces trine Jupiter/Mercury in Scorpio: This aspect makes it easy to get in touch with your sensitive core and find ways to express that tenderness with others. If you are in need of helpful insights and open to receiving such gifts, this aspect is naturally intuitive so you can capture incoming messages from your guides, nature, or other sources of information like the perfect book appearing or via a surprising email.
Mon December 17
Mars in Aquarius sextile Pluto in Sagittarius: This reasonably rare stimulating sextile between two planets that govern the will and willpower encourages you to exert your physical power, drives you to achieve greater success, supports your willingness to stay on target with your goals.
Moon/Uranus in Aries square Lunar Nodes: The Moon feels wobbly when it squares its Nodes, which means your emotions can feel wobbly or confused today. In addition, the shocks and spontaneity of Uranus might make you be reactive, erratic, or suddenly shift course.
Tue December 18
Moon in Aries opposite Venus/Ceres in Libra: The developing conjunction of Venus and Ceres can lead to a desire to beautify your home, self, the world around you, especially as they are meeting up in artistic Libra. Thankfully this pairing also brings civility, harmony and justice based on impeccable ethics and values. The risk-taking Aries Moon might activate a desire for the next two days to rearrange your space, make impulsive purchases and initiate new relationships.
Moon in Aries quincunx Mercury/Jupiter in Scorpio: You might feel prodded or agitated by someone who is pressuring you in some way. Or you might feel an inner angst or divide between that you think you should do versus what you want to do.
Wed December 19
Sun in Sagittarius square Chiron in Pisces: On days when Chiron’s energy is ‘up’, like today, magical events can occur, you can lose track of time, things can go mysteriously missing or be returned. This tense square could manifest as sunny, direct Sagittarius squaring off with elusive, evading Pisces, creating difficulties in some communications as some seek the truth and others are in avoidance-mode.
Moon/Juno conjunction in Aries: This monthly alignment helps you initiate new patterns or behaviors in your key relationships and is great for a spontaneous date night.
Thu December 20
Sun in Sagittarius trine Uranus in Aries: Make space today for the quirky, a sudden adventure, or unpredictable events with this lovely trine involving spontaneous Uranus. Welcome your wilder side and trust your intuition or desire to suddenly shift directions.
Moon in Taurus opposite Mercury/Jupiter conjunction in Scorpio: If you have financial dealings, money issues you need to resolve, or bills need to be paid, this aspect can help you. Also, the mind might get wrapped up in complex thinking but the emotions say, keep it simple, trust the heart.
WINTER SOLSTICE in the Northern Hemisphere ~ 3:23 pm MST
Fri December 21
Winter Solstice: Blessed be, today marks the celestial New Year in our Northern Hemisphere. Find your way to ceremonially celebrate and give thanks for this holy moment, be that sharing a toast with friends, lighting a candle in solitary ceremony, buying a treat of love for your pet, releasing things back to the Earth you no longer need. Whatever makes your heart express its form of of gratitude, do that, be that. Feel the deep chi of the Earth reach its state of rest below your feet as you feel your own chi touching bottom, connecting you to your depth of Being. Soon enough, we will sense it rise again with the turnaround of the returning Light, a sacred blessing for our Earth.
Mercury/Jupiter conjunction in Scorpio: WOW. Another jaw-dropping moment for we astrologers as these two planets complete their union just before the moment of Winter Solstice. The super-intense and revealing recent Mercury retrograde in Scorpio now crosses Jupiter for the final time, marking the completion of a long investigation (you know what I’m talking about). A crossing has been made. I stand in awe and appreciation of this celestial synchronicity.
Venus in Libra trine Neptune in Aquarius: Venus and Neptune are planets that represent love, imagination, heart-based values, spiritually-evolved behavior. This alignment is a grace-filled moment on the day of Winter Solstice for our planet, bathing us all with compassion, dignity, possibility, awakening, civility, harmony, and so much more. May its grace fill your life with good things and spark an optimistic attitude going forward. We are moving in the right direction.

I’m thrilled to share that this year’s journal will include “signposts” from sidereal astrologer Lyn Dalebout (www.EarthWordSkyWord.com) which offer energetic expressions of what the stars are communicating with us during each of the Sacred Nights of Winter.
The theme this year is Turning Into Your Self, and will offer a journey of understanding what hinders us from being our True Self, and what supports us in embodying our True Self.
For those interested in gaining clarity and direction, deepening your soul life, and having quality stillness, reflection and restoration during the holiday season, this journal will be a very helpful tool.
