New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Cancer

I need ample, active and contemplative time in nature now more than ever. In wild nature, the mind/body/spirit naturally de-stresses and we are often given sage advice from the plants, land, animals, if we are listening. These gifts greatly enhance our abilities to cope, flow and adjust to the never-ending changes we are making both personally and collectively. With that in mind, I am grateful to post the amazing and unique photographs of my Bear sister and brother, Cathy and Ron Hummel, of Wildlife Visions as the visual accompaniment to this New SolLunar Cycle which begins in Earth/home-centric sidereal Cancer and quickly shifts into playful, creative Leo. This time of year summer is winding down and the first hints of autumn’s harvest are taking shape.
This New SolLunar Cycle/New Moon is also a Partial Solar Eclipse, with a very different tone than the challenging Lunar Eclipse of two weeks ago which was more about completions. With a Solar Eclipse linked to the North Lunar Node, we have a chance to redefine our self, our purpose, our goals based on who we are becoming. We are given an energetic nudge to consciously move in new directions more fulfilling to us now. This in no way implies it will be easy to make these shifts that usually require great courage to move on. But courage of the heart is one of Leo’s greatest gifts.
On the days you feel confident and capable of handling the immense changes you are being asked to integrate, that calmer feeling could be attributed to two longer–range trines influencing our planetary field: Jupiter trine Neptune, completing on August 19, and Saturn trine Uranus. These two alignments create the astrological backdrop of gradual, positive shifts with plenty of support helping you.
During these two weeks we will thankfully complete the brunt of the super-intense Mars retrograde (read my notes below) as well as finish up the current Mercury retrograde cycle on August 18.

New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Cancer
“Snowy cuddling with 399” photograph by Cathy and Ron Hummel
Here is a list of New Moon characteristics compliments of my friend/sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza from LunarPlanner:
“Beginning the Sprouting Phase of the Lunar Cycle, a new theme emerges, a new idea or concept sprouts forth. This is an inner message, an impulse expressing from a field of all possibilities deep within the unconscious mind. Often this process is one of discovery, slowly revealing a simple theme over a day or two, or it may be quite clear and specific, even suggesting a major life change. The New Moon is a perfect time for meditation or a quite walk—to go within self and listen.”
Sat August 11
New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Cancer: When the sun rises this morning, our new SolLunar Cycle will have just hatched. Both Sun and Moon meet up in later sidereal Cancer, linked to our historical roots, family stories and issues, the land, caregiving and nurturing. As some of you are still undergoing the severe challenges and losses of the Mars retrograde, this may be a more somber New Moon creating a desire to be with your closer people, animals, sharing emotions and stories of the past. Lastly, Juno is in square to the New Moon highlighting significant partnerships/relationships either entering our lives or exiting.
Mercury retrograde in Cancer square Jupiter in Libra: This is a significant aspect in terms of new information coming to light, secrets revealed, internal awarenesses bubbling to the surface helping you make a decision. You may be negotiating a contract and reach a decision that works for both of you. You may have uncomfortable feelings about those you are close to as you realize how you are growing beyond your previous self. Don’t freak out. Just know all is up for reinvention and honesty is required.
Sun August 12
Venus in Virgo trine North Lunar Node: This helpful trine offers a positive subtle shift toward the directional change of your intentions, goals, or healing currently in process. You may feel you have turned a corner.
Moon in Leo: Use the energy of the monthly Leo Moon for activities linked to recreation, art, being with the kids you love and who inspire you to be more creative. Take time for your self, too, to feel honor the needs of your inner child/playful adult.
Mon August 13
Moon/Ceres conjunction in Leo: The Moon and Ceres are both planets linked to emotionally caring for self and others. When they come together once a month, you can feel super-energized to help many, or be required to do so given life’s circumstances. You might feel an overwhelming desire to break free of routine so use today to establish small simple joyful activities as part of your dailyness of life.
Tue August 14
Moon/Venus conjunction in Virgo: The double-jewel of the crescent Moon and Venus arrives at dusk again so hopefully your skies are clear so you can view this beauty, always a time to plant the seeds of intentions. When they pair up in Virgo, health and healing, being in service, and hard work are highlighted as themes. You might get a second wind tonight.
Wed August 15
Minor Grand Trine: The Sun in Cancer trine Vesta in Scorpio sextile Moon in Virgo: The refreshing geometry of this triangle in astrology provides ease and opportunity today that might involve finances, the home-front, ongoing healing from recent days of loss or a health crisis (all part of this challenging Mars Retrograde cycle…see below).
Thu August 16
Moon in Libra opposite Uranus in Aries: This alignment happens in the early morning hours and can create jittery emotions, sudden mood shifts in regards to relationships or changes in plans. Go with the flow and be open to new possibilities.
Moon in Libra square Lunar Nodes: This aspect called the ‘moon wobble’ is similar to the above aspect and can create a feeling of emotional instability, confusion, feeling unsure about how to navigate a situation. That’s because what you have needed in the past may not be what you need now.
Juno in Aries trine Pluto in Sagittarius: Today seems to highlight our relationship dynamics and how they are shifting and growing. This aspect offers the courage to embrace change over security and stagnation. It’s a good aspect to commit to a shared adventure.
Fri August 17
Jupiter/Moon conjunction in sidereal Libra: The exuberance or increased moodiness of this monthly conjunction is amplified by tomorrow’s First Quarter Moon which is increasing planetary tension today. You can feel extra positive about things or extra emotional about challenges you are facing.
First Quarter Moon

Here’s a list of the First Quarter Moon characteristics compliments of my friend/sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza ~ www.lunarplanner.com
“The First Quarter Moon of each lunar cycle draws an external stimulus to initiate action as we move from the inspirational quarter of the lunar cycle into the action quarter. Now is the time to drop all hesitation and take the steps to move forth on what you were inspired about…it is time to now participate in trust and knowing. Trust in the process. Demonstrate this trust in physical action and you will be supported. This time is stressful or traumatic only if action is ignored. Simply, this phase is a time to work.
Sat August 18
First Quarter Moon: Moon in Scorpio square Sun in Leo: The driven and focused Scorpio Moon calls forth an emotional intensity and a desire to delve deeper. Sometimes that leads to finding the truth and sometimes it just leads to paranoia. The creative square to the sunny-personality of Sun in Leo helps lighten the mood with playful teasing. A perfect day for an intimidating adventure or passionate play date. And remember the First Quarter Moon is always about taking the next step, sometimes under pressure.
Mercury in sidereal Cancer turns direct: After three weeks, Mercury leaves it’s more reflective mood and looks toward the future. You may now have a a clearer sense of how to focus your mind or increase your mental health via daily meditation, positive affirmations, consuming uplifting literature and media as this cycle took place in secretive, family-oriented Cancer, and today Mercury also makes a helpful sextile to Venus in Virgo. This turning will trigger actions in the coming days in regards to discussions that took place or decisions that were being considered.
Sun August 19
Jupiter in Libra trine Neptune in Aquarius: Today brings the completion of this very uplifting aspect, long-range trine of optimistic, expansive Jupiter to imagining-a-better-future, compassionate Neptune. This energy has provided a calming backdrop for months, encouraging civility over the rudeness, brutality of the other challenging and aggressive astrological energies. Take time today to journal, ponder, feel your own intentional clarity and trust in being able to create the world you desire to inhabit. Be that energy-field of the honest peacemaker which takes great courage and mental focus amidst the barbarism and immaturity of many walking the planet at this time. Help humanity go forward, not backward.
Moon in Scorpio trine Mercury in Cancer: As Mercury just shifted out of retrograde yesterday, this helpful trine offers honest and wise emotional support and advice to help you process what has transpired in the last month. The serendipity of life might bring that perfect person to you while you are doing a daily errand or chore.
Mon August 20
Moon/Vesta/Saturn conjunction in Scorpio/Sagittarius: This extremely serious and focused energetic is excellent for pushing past parcrastination, accomplishing many tasks and bringing things to completion. Some of you might get turned down for a loan or job, while others will receive an acceptance letter or offer.
Tue August 21
Sun in Leo quincunx Mars retrograde in Capricorn: Leo likes to play and goof off (knowing that freedom can make one more creative) and Capricorn is ambitious, thinks long-term and wants results. You might feel that tug and pull of both desires in your own life today. This is a good aspect to help a young person find ways to be more responsible or help an elder return to being more playful.
Wed August 22
Moon/Pluto conjunction in Sagittarius: This monthly alignment is rarely mild-mannered or polite. It is fiercely honest and can also create a churning emotional chaos. Walk through this fire without blowing up your life, doing needless damage.
Venus in Virgo quincunx Neptune in Aquarius: You can use this aspect to sort through possibilities about future directions and goals. Connect with how you demonstrate and act on your higher values (or not) through daily choices you are making. This aspect is about walking your talk.
Thu August 23
Moon/Mars/South Lunar Node conjunction in Capricorn: This challenging aspect unfolds in various stages throughout the day and reverberates back to the very tense Lunar Eclipse of July 27, forcing you to revisit what happened during that period, potentially to see how far you have come since then or continue process grief or anger. The Moon governs our emotions, Mars our action-selves, and the South Lunar Node is linked to our past/past lives. Conflicts or connections from your past might appear needing further resolution.
Fri August 24
Moon in Capricorn opposite Mercury in Cancer: Today’s alignment supports you to make decisions that you finally feel sure about (having pondered choices while Mercury was retrograde) especially in regards to family (Cancer) and professional relationships (Capricorn).
Sat August 25
Sun in Leo trine Uranus in Aries: This annual breakthrough aspect offers sudden new possibilities or the courage to break free of restrictive patterns/relationships with others or yourself. The revolutionary options are further amplied because this dynamic trine precedes tomorrow’s Full Moon, which will be exact just after midnight. It brings fireworks, sudden realizations, creativity and invention. Happy Full Moon tomorrow!

MARS RETROGRADE NOTES:
Mars in sidereal Capricorn turns retrograde: I’ve been alerting you to this aspect since early May when this aspect began on May 12. On June 26, Mars halts and heads backwards (from Earth’s perspective) until August 27, creating a volatile, perhaps challenging summer. It’s important to keep a cool head when surprising events arise.
It’s hard to find some positive words, but let me give it a go: Mars in it’s highest aspect is about the courage to take a stand based on your beliefs, values, what your most deeply want to protect. While in retrograde, you are examining internally what that means to you, encouraging you to live a life of integrity and a willingness to speak your truth when it comes time. The link to the South Lunar Node, tied to our past history, can be bring up the need to revisit what didn’t get said in the past with the hopes of making amends for one’s mistakes. No transits in astrology are ‘bad’. Some are just more challenging, and therefore, growth-producing, and serve us as giant wake-up calls to our own courage of heart.
Here are a few things I’ve already said, with some additions, about one of 2018’s most important astrological events:
Mars turns retrograde on June 26 until August 27 (however the ‘shadow’ period that defines the whole cycle runs form May 12 – October 8) catalyzing a tornadic portal of change and crisis for many and on the world stage. During the time of it’s retrograde, Mars will also be at perihelion (closest to the Earth) so it will literally and energetically be brighter, redder, bolder, more influential in our planetary field.
Mars turning retrograde implies it’s time to not push or be pushy, but be willing to take things more slowly and examine which direction you might ultimately want to go. Some of you might do a remodel of your space, but don’t be surprised or upset if there are delays in the construction process. Some of you will decide to close up shop for good.
This will be a time for many souls to choose to transition back to Spirit, which is already occurring.
Some of you will slow yourselves down physically by an injury or by choosing surgery during this time frame. Old health issues can heat up again (Mars rules inflammation) as symptoms reappear, forcing you to make the next round of changes, researching and opting for healthier choices and behaviors.
From the collective perspective, this promises to be a time of greater drama and revelation, and going to battle as Mars aligns in forceful Capricorn, ruler of our institutions, businesses and the military. As this Mars retrograde is aligned with the South Lunar Node during the entire cycle, much will be brought to light about past abuses of power on all levels, leading the way to institutional reform.
In addition, many weakened ailing infrastructures will give way, possibly leading to loss of life. We are long overdue in addressing this pressing problem. Time to fix what needs fixing.
Huge earth shifts and changes are possible as well, like the ancient granite rocks of the Grand Tetons suddenly and unexpectedly showing fissures and cracks. Earth Oracles abound. Pay attention!
