New SolLunar Cycle in Capricorn
“Sedona Cathedral” photo by Lyn Dalebout
The places I go for spiritual reflection and renewal ~ my churches ~ are most always in the wild outdoors. I grew up as an avid skier and hiker in the granite Canyons outside Salt Lake City, Utah. Most weekends, I was skiing Alta, Utah, attending ‘mogul Mass’ as my friends and I called our time frolicking in the spectacular beauty and vitality of God’s creation, celebrating the joy of being alive in our vibrant, buoyant bodies. As I came of age, the sandstone cathedrals of Southern Utah, and the garnet-studded temples of the Tetons were other places of frequent worship. I recall vividly the first time I entered The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, New York. I felt as if I had entered the inner chambers of my beloved Tetons. It was truly breathtaking. As I gazed throughout that holy expansive sanctuary, I realized in that moment how the architectural wonders of the churches and temples of this world mirror the wonders of Nature. This truth is the essence of Capricorn which encompasses celebrating the wonders of Earth, architecture as the divine perfected form of Earth, and the wisdom and longevity of stone and our elders.
In the language of astrology, Capricorn is the final phase of the Earth element, referred to as ‘exalted’ Earth, symbolic of notions that our Earth, and our bodies, are the sacred temples for our spirit to incarnate. Capricorn honors to need to care for and celebrate with consciousness and devotion our bodies, our Earth. During this month of the Sun and other planets transiting through Capricorn, it’s good to spend time caring for your body, creating the health you desire and honoring the sacred rituals that bring you closer to your divine, human essence. Capricorn also embodies the wisdom of the elders and is linked to passing of many wise guides who are complete with their learning and teaching, for now. Lastly, Capricorn is the bedrock and foundation of Earth, so we can expect some fairly large Earth events, like earthquakes and volcanoes as the upcoming eclipses may function as triggers for those events.

New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Capricorn
“Bell Rock Temple” photo by Lyn Dalebout
Here is a list of New Moon characteristics compliments of my friend/sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza from LunarPlanner:
“Beginning the Sprouting Phase of the Lunar Cycle, a new theme emerges, a new idea or concept sprouts forth. This is an inner message, an impulse expressing from a field of all possibilities deep within the unconscious mind. Often this process is one of discovery, slowly revealing a simple theme over a day or two, or it may be quite clear and specific, even suggesting a major life change. The New Moon is a perfect time for meditation or a quite walk—to go within self and listen.”
Tue January 16
New SolLunar Cycle in sidereal Capricorn: When a New Moon takes place in responsible, ambitious Capricorn, we embark on a four-week period that encourages long-range planning, making decisions about what you will be or won’t responsible for, caring more consciously for the sacred temple that is your body, getting organized, and becoming clear about what institutions or organizations you want to support. The idea is if you can imagine general goals for yourself for the upcoming year during this month, the wise and wonderful Universe can more easily assist you in making those dreams come true. Becoming clear in what you are sending out in terms of your vibrational intentions is part of this process. Capricorn does like to be the boss, so you might also have to work with not being overly controlling about your life and make space for the Great Mystery to help you.
Moon/Pluto conjunction in Sagittarius: This aspect, in play before this evening’s New Moon, is emotionally intense, increases energy or productive output and is best channeled as the willfulness to finish tasks so you don’t drag the old into the new SolLunar Cycle.
Wed January 17
Moon/Venus conjunction in Capricorn: The newly-birthed Moon pairs up with Venus. Feel embraced in a unified field of knowing your wants and your needs will be met if you spend time getting clear in your intentions. That’s a great use for this celestial portal that comes around once a month.
Thu January 18
Moon/Juno conjunction in Capricorn: As the Moon crosses Juno, a clarity about key relationships rises to your awareness. Then the Moon passes over the South Lunar Node, linked to your past history. You might take decisive action toward releasing a relationship or professional commitment. Given the number of elders transitioning out of their bodies, these two days may be linked to memorials and memorializing those who have cared for us as we have cared for them.
Mars in Scorpio trine Chiron in Pisces: Thankfully Mars is on a bit of a sabbatical these days, giving us a much needed time for respite and recuperation after a challenging end to 2017. Today, both action-driven Mars and healing Chiron are in water signs forming a supportive trine. People are kind, helpful, genuinely caring, more willing to connect in deeper emotional waters.
Fri January 19
Sun in Capricorn square Pallas Athene in Aries: This aspect is good for strategizing, planning, overcoming hurdles by being decisive about what your next step is. Organize everything, and feel more orderly by the end of the day.
Juno in Capricorn opposite Ceres in Cancer aligned with Lunar Nodes: Powerful and life-shifting completions and new beginnings are taking shape in regards to key partnerships, home situations, real estate, environmental and family issues, making it a turning point kind of day for many.
Mercury in Sagittarius sextile Neptune in Aquarius: This creative and stimulating aspect highlights the imagination, our thought processes, big ideas that are emerging. It is highly imaginative, and enhances right-brain activity in everyone so dream big with your friends. Take time for channeled writing, if that is your thing.
Venus in Capricorn sextile Vesta in Scorpio: This aspect helps us to focus financially, exploring long-term family planning options, and feeling good about being able to afford things that are important to you.
Sat January 20
Moon/Neptune conjunction in Aquarius: This uplifting aspect is the most notable one today. Imaginative conversations with all kinds of folks, co-dreaming your future with an important friend, receiving an insightful download are just a few options under the magic and possibility of this monthly union. Sometimes when Neptune is involved, taking those rose-colored glasses off becomes necessary. You see what’s really going on and will no longer allow deception or denial in your relationships.
Sun January 21
Juno/South Lunar Node conjunction in Capricorn: For those of you who have recently ended relationships or lost close beloveds or ended professional relationships, today can produce a feeling of being more at peace with these transitions or face with undeniable acceptance they are gone.
Moon/Chiron conjunction: You might be quite emotional today with this monthly alignment. Let the tears flow, a necessary and healing release, part of grieving, part of life.
Mon January 22
Moon in Pisces: It’s a mellow day. Best use for the Moon in Pisces is to allow non-doing, simple being, deeper listening to enfold you. The Moon’s sextile to Vesta in Scorpio can guide you intuitively about a financial decision. The lunar trine to Ceres in Cancer, late in the day, helps you intuitively sense what a family member might need or is up to.
Tue January 23
Moon/Uranus conjunction in Pisces square Pluto/Mercury in Sagittarius: Things get intense as the day progresses under this volatile, truth-telling square. It’s like the First Quarter Moon come early (it’s tomorrow). The intellectual probing and prying of Mercury/Pluto leads to breakdowns or breakthroughs arising from the emotional Moon/Uranus. Breaking news headlines are frequent on a day like today.

First Quarter Moon
“Illuminated from Within” photo by Lyn Dalebout
Here’s a list of the First Quarter Moon characteristics compliments of my friend/sidereal colleague Nick Anthony Fiorenza ~ www.lunarplanner.com
“The First Quarter Moon of each lunar cycle draws an external stimulus to initiate action as we move from the inspirational quarter of the lunar cycle into the action quarter. Now is the time to drop all hesitation and take the steps to move forth on what you were inspired about…it is time to now participate in trust and knowing. Trust in the process. Demonstrate this trust in physical action and you will be supported. This time is stressful or traumatic only if action is ignored. Simply, this phase is a time to work.”
Wed January 24
First Quarter Moon: Moon/Pallas Athene in Aries square Sun in Capricorn: Bold ideas and initiatives abound with the lunar alignment to Pallas Athene, the asteroid of creative wisdom, intuition, ideas, strategy. As the two make a manifestation square to the Sun in ambitious Capricorn, the pressure is on to take action and set things in motion. The courage of Aries nudges you to embark on that one next step, that will lead to the next, then the next, down the path of your dreams. Honor your courage to keep growing, evolving, creating your life as you want it.
Mercury/Pluto conjunction in sidereal Sagittarius: The annual merging of thinking, mental-health Mercury to delving, driving Pluto makes for mental obsessions and challenges for some, or enhances focused research and deep-thinking for others. Oftentimes, secrets are uncovered, and no-filters communication ensues. It’s fierce, this one.
Thu January 25
Mercury in Sagittarius sextile Jupiter in Libra: This makes for more socially-civilized conversation than yesterday’s aspects. It’s superb for fair-minded, far-seeing negotiations. People might be willing to settle a legal matter.
Moon in Aries opposite Jupiter in Libra square Juno in Capricorn: The needs of the individuals versus the needs of the whole team can be at odds today, at least temporarily. Or someone is willing to stand apart from group-think, which always takes courage, and say what they see is happening. This aspect can also lead to successful negotiations as all viewpoints are considered.
Fri January 26
Moon in Taurus opposite Mars in Scorpio: Stubbornness, determination, willfulness are the hallmarks of this emotionally charged alignment. Conflicts or fears around finances may emerge. Move your stuck emotional tension by moving your body. Workouts of great endurance are possible.
Sat January 27
Moon in Taurus trine Sun/Venus in Capricorn: This positive aspect can bring good financial news or create a feeling of success in the goals you seek to accomplish.
Mercury in Sagittarius square Uranus in Pisces: This can lead to technical glitches or disconnects in communications and communication systems. Your nervous system or mind might feel erratic or electrically charged and tense.
Venus in Capricorn opposite Ceres in Cancer: Responsibilities we have to our family members, especially the elders, are accomplished with heart and love today, even if you are tired and so are they.
Sun January 28
Moon in Gemini opposite Saturn in Sagittarius: Gregarious, curious Moon in Gemini can feel curtailed when serious Saturn makes a challenging opposition. Saturn asserts control or dominance, like an authority figure holding the mercurial Moon in Gemini accountable, unable to squirm out of facing the truth. This aspect can produce a hurricane of writing for writers, thinking for thinkers.
Mon January 29
Venus/South Lunar Node conjunction in Capricorn: Saying goodbye to someone or something is possible today, or completing a significant business or financial transaction.
Moon in Gemini opposite Pluto in Sagittarius: This is a busy-body, gossipy energy, or get-to-the-truth kind of aspect. It’s also excellent for intellectual research or further exploring and developing an idea.
Tue January 30
Moon in Cancer opposite Mercury in Capricorn: When Moon (emotions) opposes Mercury (thoughts), those two parts of yourself can feel miles apart, not congruent. What do you feel you should do versus what do you think your should do? Best just to sit with this dilemma and explore, even appreciate, your own complexity.
This tension is amplified greatly tonight as the SuperMoon (due to perigee) Partial Lunar Eclipse is exact early tomorrow morning, near sunrise, sure to be one of the more spectacular Full Moons of this year. Falling asleep may require using all your tools tonight and tomorrow, or, stay up and experience the energetic emotional vitality of our Moon nestling so close to our Earth, calling forth great illumination of heart and mind.
