“Desert Mermaid” by Lyn Dalebout
This picture is a portrait of me, or at least a picture of how I currently feel as I dive into my New Year. I am in a warm, colorful place, fulfilling a long-time dream to be out of the pristine white cold beauty of the Tetons for Winter Solstice, the celestial New Year in our Northern Hemisphere. I am currently in Arizona, walking barefoot daily on warm sandstone. And even though I am in a desert landscape, I feel like this watery mermaid exploring new emotional terrain in this beckoning landscape. As the historic Uranus/Pluto square is about to complete in exactitude in March 2015, perhaps you too might be longing for adventure, about to discover a whole new set of interests, community or homeland. 2015 promises to be excitingly exploratory for many. May that be you!

Today is Winter Solstice in our Northern Hemisphere, occurring at 4:03 pm MST. This marks the beginning of the celestial New Year when our life-giving Sun begins it’s journey northward again. In a delightful cosmic coincidence, today is also a New Moon, which occurs just over an hour after the sacred Solstice moment. What a very auspicious day and a very auspicious way to enter this New Year! This is a very positive heavenly omen for 2015, which promises to be an upbeat, forward moving year for all, as we also continue to integrate the major challenging transitions we have navigated in recent years. The third major event at play today is Uranus heading into direct motion from its retrograde from mid-July 2014. Uranus manifests as breakthroughs and always encourages you to BE YOURSELF. This aspect gives you the green light to embrace and celebrate the utterly unique individual that you are. One of a kind, we all are.

The usual advice for the first day of a new SolLunar cycle is take it easy. Things have just hatched, are just getting started. No need to rush or push your agenda. Not so this time around. The forthright, teacherly Sagittarius Moon, newly hatched, makes a series of conjunctions today, triggering one intense event after another. The Moon portal first aligns with mental Mercury and you can feel a fusion of your heart and mind or an intense desire to communicate with everyone, non-stop. Then, the Moon moves on to Vesta, that asteroid that rules dedicated focus, which means you might want to put your newly hatched idea into some kind of immediate motion. Things get more intense as the Moon aligns with reconstructive surgery Pluto and squares take-a-risk Uranus. May you ride this crescendoing wave with Grace. Then, at nightfall, the Moon makes a monthly conjunction to Venus. You may experience a deep sense of relief that somehow what you need and what you want have become one desire, no more separation, no more doubt.

The aspect of note today is the exact Mercury/Vesta conjunction taking place in sidereal Sagittarius. The energy of focusing ~ Vesta ~aligns with the planetary ruler of our mental states ~ Mercury. “What you think is what you get” holds sway today. Beware of your thoughts, harness in those obsessive/compulsive tendencies, and focus the laser of your mind in the direction of what you want to create. And IT WILL BE SO. Mercury rules the Magician card in the ancient wise system of Tarot. The Magician card advises us that we are the creators of our world. We just have to claim that power and not give it away as we have been trained to do for too many centuries by too many institutions, religions, outdated cultural habits. Today’s ambitious Capricorn Moon increases your desire to control the outcome of your destiny. Be the boss of yourself, would be Capricorn’s advice.

Today’s energies might span the range of furious and ferocious, to focused and fierce as double whammy conjunctions occur between Mercury/Pluto and Mars/Moon. Mercury aligns with Pluto once a year, and those born under this alignment have extremely focused, even obsessive minds. This aspect appears in the the astrological charts of forensic researchers, CIA agents, depth psychologists and psychiatrists, to name just a few career choices. Today’s alignment takes place in futuristic, at times, dogmatic Sagittarius, so extremist actions or world views might temporarily grab the headlines. And whenever the warrior Mars aligns with the emotional Moon, our desire to act out our emotions, for good or bad, gets activated. Yes, this is one very intense day. Don’t curb your enthusiasm, but channel it wisely.

The Aquarius Moon on this Christmas day is great for socializing, attending a new kind of gathering, service or ritual. The square to Saturn in sidereal Scorpio can make for serious conversations or manifest as a need to control another. That’s never a good idea. Work on your own jealousy, insecurity, which leads to a need to control your external environment. Choose to evolve into a fear-free human (it is possible!) confident in your core, speaking and living your inner truth, and allowing others to do the same. Trust. Trust that the compassionate Universe, the Divine Mystery, will bring the best to you and to those around you.

Today has a wonderful confluence of astrological influences at play. So play! The sextile of our enlightened Sun to imaginative Neptune bodes well for amped up creativity and compassion in our planetary Field. And the Moon’s alignment with Neptune and healing Chiron carries a similar theme, encouraging you to reach out to a friend, a stranger, and share some love. There is also a more challenging, very direct opposition of Mars to Juno taking place. Mars rules our instincts of aggression, sexual passion, and speaking our truth. Juno astrologically governs all our core relationships, especially a spouse, a soul colleague, a therapist. This aspect might feel initially uncomfortable, but ultimately refreshing, as honesty is always refreshing. Another splendid use of this aspect is to move your body in fun athletic ways with a buddy.

Yes the intensity continues! It’s not letting up friends. Today Vesta makes an exact conjunction with Pluto, and it doesn’t get more obsessed and focused than this, from an astrological perspective. Like the surgeon who never misses his incision or the investigator who misses no detail at a crime scene, you too can harness this kind of laser-like focus today. Give over to your obsessions. Hopefully they are reasonably healthy. A quincunx forms between Mercury in futuristic, visionary Sagittarius and Juno in more conservative Cancer. Use this aspect to create a new vision of where you want your family to go, as well as visualizing where you want our Family of Humanity to go.

Pinpoint focus continues today. We have finally reached the exact Saturn/Pallas Athene conjunction that has been building for a while, nudging us in new creative directions, and even forcing new commitments. It’s time to get serious about what we know we need to get serious about. That may be in the realm of relationship, deeper therapy, or pursuing a long dreamt of creative project. And since the First Quarter Moon arrives today as well and aligns with radical Uranus, a desire to take a sudden leap may consume you. I would suggest trusting that intuitive insight today. You have been pondering something for a while, now it is time to LEAP.
